Is the chain on the kusari gama traditionally attached near the blade or near the pommel?
I am making my own practice kusari gama out of plastic and wood, and I am wondering where the chain should be attached. I have seen pictures of both and I dont really know what I should do. I kind of favor attaching it to the pommel (is that term proprietary to swords?) both for ease of swinging the chain and I quite like a reverse grip with sickle type fighting. The only downside I can see to attaching it to the would be that It might not swing as well if I held the weight in hand and swung with the sickle at the end, but I do not plan on doing that anyway, as I understand the chain is for swinging and disarming, and the blade for finishing. On the other side, I would not want to train with one style, only to find out that I cannot procure a real kusari gama of the same style. I also wonder about chain length, as there seems to be no norm, because I have seen pictures with laughably short, and long chains. The chain I have is rather short, but I must work with what I have. So, any martial artists care to share some insight on how I should design my bo kusari gama?
