Want a second dog, what kind???

We have a 9 month old jack russell shitzu mix called Bounce and we want to get her a playmate when she turns 1 or so. We have NO idea what kind of dog would be best to pair her with. Help??????? Nothing too big though, I am a shortie and big dogs tend to unnerve me!!!
